I have a 7yr old mare.I dont much about her past except that she was on the verge of death when I rescued her.She was so bad that they had a blanket on her to hide the sagging skin and bones from the humane society?She was infested with horse lice so bad to where her hair was falling out?Her feet were absesed and almost curled up. It is by far one of the worst cases of neglet I had seen in a long time.At first I wasnt sure of her fate but with the help of my aunt and the local vet we done everthing she had been needing for a long time. We kept her on my aunts farm and nursed her back to health.She is now one of the best horses Ive had the pleasure of spending time with.She has filled out and doing very good.Nothing like she was when she became part of the family.On my aunts farm is only a 9yr old gilding but wasnt enough pasture for both horses, so i moved her to a friends house.My friends house has 30 acres of horse pasture and only heaven for my precious "Buggy". She has been at my friends for about two months now and there is two gildings and one stud.The stud just turned two not long ago.Today I went to pamper my baby and noticed that she is lactating?Seemed to be more then she should be if she had mated with the young stud? Is it possible she could be doing this so soon? Is it possible that one of the gildings could have gotten her pregnant?My mare didnt start showing any signs of being in heat or any sign of "Love in the air" so to speak.Could this be a delayed reaction from being so neglected before I got her? Maybe some sort of hormonal embalance? I have really good friend who does my ferrier work and he says he dont think she would show signs of pregnancy this early.He seems to think she is having a false pregnancy?He has been around horses for therty-seven yrs and I trust most all his advise,but if something is going on with my precious "Buggy" I just got to know.Can someone help me? | Resolved Question: Getting rid of Pigeon Flys (Pseudolynchia Canarienis)? So I'm currently taking care of an injured pigeon. I've noticed that he has had some bugs crawling around him and when I let him bath they flew. I did my research and they seem to be pigeon flies. I just want to know what's the best way to get rid of them, which sprays are the best to use, and where to get them (Petco doesn't seem to carry them, at least not on their website) I know that it has to be permethrin based, I would just like to know which spray is best to use. Would "Scalex Mite and Lice Spray" work? They seem to carry that at PetSmart. I would prefer a brand that is usually carried in stores (so you don't have to order online) because I want to get ride of these bugs asap, I don't want the pigeon getting sick, especially while injured. They have TONS of toys in their room, my question is Instead of bagging EVERYTHING what if i just kept them out of the room for a wk. Will the toys be clean after that or should I bag it all. |
| Resolved Question: Best way to check YOURSELF for lice? [I am cross-posting this to Parenting from General Health as well, because I figured parents would actually have some experience with this problem.] My fiance and I had his kids for the summer, but little did we know that his ex sent their daughter here already with lice and decided not to mention it. Nice, huh? She didn't inform us of the issue until after we'd had her for most of the summer and were dropping her back off at the end. Now, I might have had an idea if she'd complained of a lot of itching, but she didn't really exhibit any real problems, so I never thought to check. We shared hairbrushes, hair ties, pillows, etc etc ALL summer long. I would have never done any of that had I known. Which I think might have been the point to the mother, but that's neither here nor there. Everything I find seems only to do with how to check your kids for lice. And, I was wondering if anyone had any tips about self-checks and self-treatment? My hair is a little over waist length, so this is going to be an undertaking, either way. I didn't have any itching over the summer, but - in the past few days - I've started to itch quite a bit. I don't know how much of it is psychological from finding out that she brought lice here, or if maybe I acquired some nits that are finally beginning to hatch. It grosses me out to think that might be the case, but I need to know. I don't see anything at the crown of my hair or around the edges, but that's not where it's itching anyways. My fiance gave me a quick glance over when we first found out, but he said he didn't see anything. But, it's itching a lot more now, and I think I'm just going to have to figure out a way to do this myself. So, again...any tips would be appreciated! Sorry for the length of this post, I'm just really upset about the whole thing. I haven't had to worry about lice since I was in the 2nd grade. Thank you! |
